Governor's Column

by Edward A. Rankin, MD, FACS

It has been my great privilege and pleasure to serve the Washington Chapter as Governor, and I wish the new Governor soon to be appointed much success. We are most fortunate to have exemplary leadership and to have one of the most active and dynamic chapters in the College. Through your continued efforts and support, we can maintain our momentum as we strive to meet the challenges and maximize the opportunities of this new century.

A new Board of Governors project is under way and is one in which I am personally, especially interested. This project-"Volunteerism and Giving Back to Society Among Surgeons"-was approved by the Board of Regents and is coordinated by the Board of Governor's Committee on Socioeconomic Issues. A Bulletin article on this subject will include a tear-off reply card for Fellows to report their volunteer activities. A database will be developed from a follow-up survey of respondents. Additionally, interviews with selected Fellows at the Clinical Congress and panels and future courses on volunteerism at Clinical Congress will be instituted.

I believe that any surgeon who has performed any type of medical volunteer activity will attest to it, bringing forth much of the best that medicine has to offer. Many surgeons already are engaged in some form of volunteerism, although many more are unaware of available opportunities. Making this information available and highlighting what is being done will be some of the important work of the committee. Be on the lookout for information in the Bulletin, and support this noble cause.
