The District of Columbia Committee on Trauma Year 2001 UpDate
by Samir Fakhry, MD, FACS
ATLS
Over the past two years, the DC COT has put together several ATLS® courses. We have had both student courses and instructor courses. These courses have been held at Inova Fairfax Hospital and at the Washington Hospital Center.
We are averaging three provider courses and one instructor course annually. Kevin Dwyer, MD, FACS, Associate Chief, Trauma Services, Inova Fairfax Hospital, is currently the coordinator of ATLS activities for the DC COT. Ms. Susan Kennedy from the Washington Hospital Center has been very active in arranging and coordinating courses. With the support of these coordinators, we have been able to provide ATLS certification to providers in our region. We hope to continue providing an adequate number of courses to meet the needs in this area.
Residents' Paper Competition
The Residents' Paper Competition has been held for the past two years. Each year, we have sent forward one basic science paper and one clinical research paper to the regional competition. Overall, we have done well at the regional competition and hope to continue to send high quality papers. Residents should be encouraged to send in their papers, since there are cash awards and an opportunity to present at the regional and national levels. This competition is held in the fall of each year.
Educational and Social Meetings
The Committee on Trauma holds a dinner twice a year. The purpose of this dinner is to provide an educational offering as well as an opportunity for surgeons who participate in trauma care in this area to become acquainted and develop good working relationships. We hope to have this year's second dinner meeting in the fall. Anyone interested should contact the Trauma Surgery Offices at Inova Fairfax Hospital at (703)698-3359.
