Young Surgeons Committee Report
by Debra H. Ford, MD, FACS
Chair, Young Surgeons Committee

The members of the Young Surgeons Committee have been busy completing three of the five planned activities for the year. The fall session of All-City Grand Rounds, held on September 25, was a great success. The attendance rate was one of the highest ever, and there was representation from all surgical teaching programs in the Washington metropolitan area. I would like to thank the program directors for their continued support of this event. During the September Grand Rounds, Jon Wesley, MD, a surgical resident at Howard University Hospital, and Chance Conner, MD, of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, presented interesting cases. COL Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, MD, FACS, provided a great interactive environment as the rounds moderator.

In addition, the committee presented the Third Annual Advanced Operative Strategies Course on September 18 at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). LTC Craig D. Shriver, MD, FACS, served as the course coordinator, and his complete summary of the event follows in this newsletter.

Next, the young surgeons' Fall Dinner will take place on November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Embassy of Austria. This black-tie- optional event will be catered by Design Cuisine, and the Mike Arenstein Jazz Ensemble will provide the music. Seymour 1. Schwartz, MD, FACS, was scheduled to serve as our guest speaker, but, due to unforeseen circumstances, he is unable to attend. However, it is with great pleasure that I announce that George Sheldon, MD, FACS, President of the College, has agreed to be our guest speaker for the evening. I invite all members of the Chapter and local residents to attend and enjoy the festivities.

Finally, the Basic Science Review Course will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on January 8, 2000, at USUHS. All members of the College's Candidate Group are invited to attend free of charge.

As you can see, the committee continues to work hard to provide service and educational opportunities for the local surgical community. Thanks for your ongoing support. See you at the Fall Dinner!
