Third Operative Strategies Course a Success
by LTC Craig D. Shriver, MD, FACS
Course Director
Chief residents from throughout the metropolitan Washington area participated in the chapter's Third Annual Advanced Operative Stragegies Course on September 18.

The chapter's Young Surgeons Committee hosted its Third Annual Advanced Operative Strategies Course on September 18, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. This course allows chief surgical residents at area training programs to perform complex open surgical procedures on fresh cadavers. While performing the procedures, the residents are mentored by regional surgeons who are clinically active and expert in their fields. During this year's course chief residents were able to perform Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy, esophagectomy, hepatectomy, proctectomy with total mesorectal excision, and uncommon vascular exposures on the cadavers. A record number of resident participants evaluated each portion of the program as "excellent" or "good," and all indicated that the course should be repeated next year.

While I served as the course director, five other area surgeons gave generously of their time and talents to ensure the day's success. They are: Drs. Phillip Corcoran, Debra Ford, James Goff, Ralph Jones, and Mark Steves. Additionally, Ethicon Endosurgery and 3M Corporation should be thanked for their generous financial support of this educational program.

Additionally, the course results have been presented two years running at the Association of Program Directors in Surgery Annual Meeting. The attendees at that session have been very impressed with this course and have indicated that they hope to present similar courses in their areas, as well.
