  2. Summary of Young Surgeons Forum,
    March, 1, 2001

    Farouck N. Obeid, MD, FACS reported that young surgeons age 40 and under, were surveyed as to their interests. Over 80 surgeons responded indicating their active interest in participating in activities and programs for young surgeons. The first Young Surgeons Forum was conducted on March 1, 2001 at the Novi Hilton, where 27 surgeons attended. They received a review of College activities and participated in a discussion of a method of representing young surgeons at the Council. Also considered were mechanisms to continue communication and to bring "grass roots" young surgeons' interests to the Council. Projects and areas for activity were also identified, one of which is to be involved in the Michigan legislative arena.

    Jon H. Sutton, State Affairs Associate, Health Policy and Advocacy Dlepartment, ACS addressed the Forum regarding the activities of the College in Washington DC and described several advocacy opportunities, e.g. the Key Contact Program. Discussion continued regarding the possibility of conducting future Forums.

  3. Summary of Legislative Action Committee
    May 3, 2001

    Andrew W. Saxe, MD, FACS, President reported that he, Doctors Obeid, Hoshal, Steffes, Borst, Walsh and Mr. Plasman were joined by Mr. Kevin A. Kelly, Managing Director and Colin J. Ford, Manager, State Government Affairs, to discuss the politics of Medicine and to identify the Michigan Legislative issues and venues whereby MCACS could take appropriate action on issues specific to surgeons and join with MSMS when their interests and efforts are in concert. Several issues were identified, such as timely payment legislation, the CRNA issue. Following Discussion staff was requested to assemble a packet of information to identify current legislative issues of interest to surgeons, listing of surgeons participating on MSMS committees, identification of House and Senate districts so that surgeons could identify the offices representing them.

    The Emergency Trauma System and the activities related to this system to take place during the coming months were considered. This matter also begs the attention and efforts of MCACS and its Young Surgeons. Discussion ensued.

  4. New Business:

    Select Name for the Committee:
    Farouck N. Obeid, MD, FACS initiated discussion. Several alternatives were considered. It was determined to recommend to the Council that the Issues Committee be renamed the Yound Surgeons Issues Committee.

    Select Activities & Assign Responsibilities
    There was general discussion regarding a myriad of interests and activities of interest to young surgeons. Four areas of interest / activity were identified and young surgeons volunteered to chair or co-chair the activity:

    Each Young surgeons Activity chairs agreed to advise the Committee Chair from time to time regarding their work and to prepare a written report for the next scheduled Young Surgeons Issues Committee Meeging and Council Meeting.

    Select Forum & Time for Next Meeting
    Following discussion it was reconfirmed that the four activity groups would procede with their work and would convene again on the date determined by the President for the next Young Surgeons Issues Committee.

    Other:
    There was discussion pertaining to the ACS Hospital Trauma Verification Program and several ideas were put forth about MCACS Young Surgeon participation.

  5. Adjournment
