Stereotactic Breast Biopsy: Medical Radiation Physics for Surgeons

(4 CME credits; a four part series with brief Introduction)
Presented by Robert J. Pizzutiello, Jr., MS, FAAPM, FACMP

Course Overview

This series of presentations is intended to provide surgeons (or other physicians) with the knowledge necessary to meet the Surgeon (or Other Physician)-Initial Qualifications requirement established by American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) for the ACS Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Accreditation Program. Completion of a post-test with 100% accuracy is required to earn CME for this program.

Introduction

Part I: Radiation Dose, Risk, and Safety for Surgeons

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, a viewer will:

  • Understand the doses and risks of radiation associated with Stereotactic Breast Biopsy (SBB)
  • Have information on which to base answers to patient questions about radiation
  • Understand the effect of radiation doses used in SBB (multiple exposures, etc.)
  • Understand the role of the medical physicist

Part II: Image Quality in Screen-Film Mammography

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, a viewer will:

  • Understand the limitations of mammographic visualization
  • Know how to recognize the technical factors that may affect visualization of an abnormality, and optimize for SBB visualization
  • Understand that screen-film imaging techniques form the basis for digital imaging techniques used in SBB

Part III: Digital Imaging for Mammography and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, a viewer will:

  • Understand the benefits of digital imaging
  • Recognize the terms associated with digital mammography
  • Be familiar with screen-film capabilities
  • Be familiar with and understand the various limitations of screen-film mammography

Part IV: Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Quality Control for Surgeons

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, a viewer will:

  • Understand the surgeon’s role in quality control
  • Be familiar with quality control problems unique to Stereotactic Breast Biopsy (SBB)
  • Be familiar with federal guidelines for performing SBB
  • Be familiar with the Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons

Intended Audience

This program is intended for surgeons (or other physicians) who perform stereotactic breast biopsy regularly and wish to have their facility or program accredited by the American College of Surgeons Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Accreditation Program.
