The American Cancer Society developed a standing Task Force on Children and Cancer. This group convened a workshop in September 1991 on the problems of children and adolescents with cancer. The group observed that adolescent patients with cancer are generally not managed by multidisciplinary care teams at pediatric cancer centers. In addition, pediatric patients who are treated by adult oncologists in community practices are rarely entered into cooperative group clinical trails. The group also noted a need for comprehensive guidelines for psychosocial care of children with cancer and access to skilled medical follow up, insurance, and employment opportunities for long-term survivors. Currently, pediatric cancer centers are not well represented among hospitals with American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer approved programs; therefore, the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) does not have access to adequate data sources for pediatric cancer. Only one-third of cancers that occurred among children under age 15 in 1988 and 1990 were reported to the NCDB.
