CoC Cancer Care Guidelines Repository

Care guidelines provide a general template for quality, cost-effective management of the cancer patient. Such guidelines may be in relation to screening, genetic counseling, early diagnosis, and prevention strategies as well as treatment and follow up of the cancer patient. The Commission on Cancer does not endorse any specific guideline, but has elected to make guidelines from various national organizations available through this Web site for informational purposes only. Inclusion on this Web site does not constitute a guarantee or endorsement of these guidelines by the Commission on Cancer or the American College of Surgeons.

American Joint Committee on Cancer - AJCC

American Medical Association - AMA

The AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (Consortium), together with the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), are leading a multi-stakeholder effort to develop physician-level, evidence-based performance measures for oncology. These performance measures are based on well established clinical guidelines from such organizations as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), ASCO, and the American College of Radiology (ACR). The final version of the ASTRO/ASCO/Consortium Oncology measures will be posted on the Consortium website:  www.physicianconsortium.org

National Cancer Institute – NCI

The NCI does not produce cancer care guidelines, but instead examines evidence and provides information using a number of mechanisms. The NIH Office of Medical Applications of Research conducts evidence-based assessments of medical practice and state-of-the-science using systematic reviews of the state of medical practice or science. From these assessments Consensus Development Statements and State of the Science Statements are produced based on the strength of the evidence. Consensus Development Statements have been produced for breast, cervical, colorectal and ovarian cancer.

A second method is for providing information is the Physicians Data Query (PDQ) that provides summary statements based on monthly reviews of the literature in a number of areas related to cancer including treatment. Information is provided for health care professionals as well as patients. The web site and cancers sites can be found at the following website: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cancerdatabase
