>>Fellows Leadership Society Awards Luncheon

19th Annual FLS Recognition Luncheon

"American medicine today is one of the marvels of the world. The success of American medicine is due directly to previous years of research. If we fail adequately to support current research, the medicine of tomorrow will be the medicine of today, and we will have failed our children."

2006 Distinguished Philanthropist Award

The American College of Surgeons Foundation proudly honors Dr. and  Mrs. Maurice J. Jurkiewicz with the 2006 Distinguished Philanthropist Award.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1962, Maurice J. Jurkiewicz, MD, FACS, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland in 1946 with a degree in dentistry (DDS).  In 1952, Dr. Jurkiewicz received his medical (MD) degree from Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Jurkiewicz served his residency in plastic/reconstructive surgery and general surgery at Barnes Hospital at Washington University, St. Louis, MO.

Currently, Dr. Jurkiewicz is professor of surgery emeritus at Emory University, Atlanta, GA.  He was the chief of plastic surgery at the University of Florida from 1959 to 1971 and chief of surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Gainesville, FL, from 1968 to 1971.  In 1971, he became chief of reconstructive/plastic surgery at Emory University (until 1993), and a plastic surgeon consultant at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC (until 1991).  From 1972 to 1977, he was also chief of surgical services at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and chief of surgery at the VAMC in Atlanta from 1989 to 1993.

Dr. Jurkiewicz served as the 70th President of the American College of Surgeons (1989-1990).  He was also president of the American Society of Head and Neck Surgeons (1989).  He has been awarded honorary fellowships in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1990) and the Southern Surgical Association (2004).

Dr. Jurkiewicz’s extraordinary contributions to the field of surgery and to the welfare of surgical patients—together with Dr. and Mrs. Jurkiewicz’s planned estate gift to the American College of Surgeons—illustrate the contributions the Distinguished Philanthropist Award was established to recognize.

Dr. and Mrs. Jurkiewicz are the 17th recipients of the Distinguished Philanthropist Award.
