Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery

At present, the American College of Surgeons has established twelve Advisory Councils: Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, General Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Neurological Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. The Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery consists of representatives from the Board of Regents, five specialty societies: American Association of Neurological Surgeons; Canadian Neurological Society; Congress of Neurological Surgeons; Joint Council of State Neurological Societies; and Neurosurgical Society of America, as well as four representatives from the Board of Governors and one representative from the American Board of Neurological Surgery. The Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery is a committee of the Board of Regents and has been assigned the following functions:

  • To serve as a liaison in the communication of information to and from Neurological Surgery societies and the Board of Regents.
  • To advise the Board of Regents on policy matters and policy formations relating to Neurological Surgery.
  • To discuss matters which the Advisory Council wishes presented to the Board of Regents or other appropriate College Department or Committee.
  • To nominate Fellows from Neurological Surgery to serve on College committees and other committees and organizations.
  • To provide Neurological Surgery input into the development of general as well as the specialty sessions, including Postgraduate Courses, for the College's Clinical Congress.

Within the past several years, with the support of the College's Board of Regents, the Advisory Council has begun to serve an expanded role within the College. The responsibility of serving as a conduit of communication between the College and Neurological Surgery has been targeted as crucial, particularly as the practice of surgery is facing changes and uncertainty under the managed care environment.

The Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery is interested in hearing your concerns and suggestions. You may forward your comments to the Council's staff liaison at mpeterson@facs.org.
