At present, the American College of Surgeons has established twelve dvisory Councils: Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, General Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Neurological Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. The Advisory Councils are standing committees of the Board of Regents and perform the following:
- serve as a liaison in the communication of information to and from surgical societies and the Board of Regents.
- advise the Board of Regents on policy matters and policy formations relating to their surgical specialties.
- discuss matters which the Advisory Council wish presented to the Board of Regents or other appropriate College Department or Committee.
- nominate Fellows from the surgical specialty to serve on College committees and other committees and organizations.
- provide specialty input into the development of general as well as the specialty sessions including Postgraduate courses for the Clinical Congress.
Within the past several years, with the support of the College's Board of Regents, the Advisory Councils have expanded their role within the College. The responsibility of serving as a conduit of communication between the College and the specialties is most important, particularly as the practice of surgery faces changes and evolves in the managed care environment. The Advisory Councils have facilitated communication between Fellows of the College and the Board and appropriate College committees.
In addition, the Advisory Councils are identifying topics of concern to all surgery. Those issues benefiting from an in-depth, multidisciplinary focus which are not already being addressed within the College are periodically reviewed with recommendations for programs brought forward to the Board of Regents.
The Advisory Councils are interested in hearing your concerns or suggestions. The Advisory Council Chairs may be contacted through the staff liaisons at the College.
