CyberSurgeon

The College goes online

This month the American College of Surgeons joins hundreds of other organizations that have entered the information age by launching its own website on the Internet. Fellows of the College, the public, and other interested users can now electronically access a wide variety of information about the College and the practice of surgery.

The launching of the College's website is the result of the work of the Board of Regents' Committee on Informatics. Established in October 1994, the committee began meeting in February 1995 and has focused its initial endeavors on meeting the immediate informatics needs of the College and its Fellows. Getting the College online, setting up electronic mail and electronic publishing systems, and providing educational programs for Fellows of the College have been its immediate objectives.

As one of its ongoing activities, the Committee on Informatics will author a regular column in the Bulletin entitled "CyberSurgeon." The idea behind CyberSurgeon is to provide the readers of the Bulletin with information that will familiarize them with the mysteries and intricacies of today's information technology and keep them up-to-date on the committee's activities.

The members of the Board of Regents Committee on Informatics are:

David A. Krusch, MD, FACS, Rochester NY, Chairman

Alfred M. Cohen, MD, FACS, New York, NY

Robert D. Gordon, MD, FACS, Atlanta, GA

Stephen J. Haines, MD, FACS, Minneapolis, MN

David M. Heimbach, MD, FACS, Seattle, WA

David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, San Diego, CA

Mitchell Morris, MD, FACS, Houston, TX

Col. Richard M. Satava, Jr., MD, FACS, Arlington, VA

Myron M. Shabot, MD, FACS, Los Angeles, CA

John Silva, MD, Arlington, VA

ACS staff: Howard Tanzman

The committee will continue to pursue these activities and will address other important issues related to informatics in the future. Please feel free to send your comments and suggestions for the column, the College's website, and future activities of the committee to Dr. Krusch or any of the other members of the committee.
