Chapter Showcase
This special session, intended for Chapter Officers and Executives, will "showcase" the Connecticut Chapter's program to mentor medical students. Also, the Maine Chapter's activities to develop a statewide database to measure outcomes will be presented. In addition, Dr. David Hunt will report on collaborative efforts to improve quality at the federal and Chapter-levels, and Dr. Marilyn Leitch, who serves as Chair for the Committee on Cancer Liaison, will present information about the activities of each Chapter's State Cancer Liaison.
Mentoring: Effecting the Future Surgical Workforce
Dr. Kristen Zarfos, President of the Connecticut Chapter, will detail how her Chapter was able to implement its mentoring program for medical students, how Chapter members were recruited to serve as mentors, and how the program has benefited medical students and surgeons alike.
The Maine Chapter's Decision to Develop a Statewide Outcomes Database
Dr. William E. Horner, the Immediate Past President, will discuss how the ME Chapter members decided to proceed with developing a statewide database to measure surgical outcomes, and he will identify potential challenges for the ME Chapter membership.
Developing the Maine Chapter's Statewide Database for Measuring Outcomes
Dr. Frank Opelka will discuss how the Maine Chapter's statewide outcomes database will be developed and operated, and he will demonstrate a "mock-up" database that he has developed. In addition, Dr. Opelka will relate how the ME Chapter's project complements the College's activities related to measuring outcomes of patients' surgical care, as well as outline some considerations Chapters' should address in developing their own statewide databases.
Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs): Opportunities for Collaboration
Dr. David Hunt, from the CMS Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, will discuss the QIO program, which consists of a national network of 53 QIOs responsible for each U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia. QIOs work with consumers, physicians, hospitals, and other caregivers to refine care delivery systems to make sure patients get the right care at the right time, particularly among underserved populations. Dr. Hunt also will identify QIO activities for Chapter involvement.
Working Effectively with Your Commission on Cancer (CoC) State Chair
Dr. Marilyn Leitch, who serves as Chair of the CoC's Committee on Cancer Liaison, will review the duties and responsibilities of each Chapter's State Chair, including (1) improving the quality of cancer care, (2) developing state cancer plans, and (3) collaborating with organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, to promote prevention and early detection of cancer. This presentation will review the State Chair's role with the Chapter and describe best practices to strengthen this relationship and to engage State Chairs in Chapter activities.
