Dr. Gewertz identified the components of emotional intelligence (EI), discussed how EI influences outcomes and productivity, and related how these insights on EI can be applied to young surgeons' lives and careers.

Dr. Souba, who has written and lectured extensively on leadership topics, reviewed the major environmental changes that have impacted surgery and their implications for a new set of skills required by the contemporary surgical leader.

Paul B. Ginsburg, PhD, President, Center for Studying Health System

Dr. Ginsburg conducts health systems research for decision makers in both the public and private sectors on a variety of topics—health insurance availability and physicians' use of and satisfaction with treatment guidelines. He reported on HSC's current and recent research, and shared his perspectives on potential changes in U.S. health policies and programs.
