Claude Organ, Jr., MD, FACS, will welcome the Young Surgeon Representatives. During his long surgical career, Dr. Organ has served as a mentor and advocate for many young surgeons.
2:30-3:30 PM Dealing with Change - Leadership Skills to Overcome Obstacles
Stephen R. T. Evans, MD, FACS, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery
Georgetown University, Washington, DC
What are the leadership skills necessary to affect change in a competitive marketplace? How can surgeons affect change in workplaces? Dr. Evans will review some of the constraints that make change difficult and provide his perspective on overcoming these obstacles. His comments and perspectives will be beneficial to community-based and academic surgeons who are trying to affect change in their institutions and practices.

3:45-4:30 PM New Arenas for Achieving Change
Thomas R. Russell, MD, FACS, ACS Executive Director, Chicago
About fours years ago, Dr. Russell closed his San Francisco-based private practice and entered a new career-leading the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Russell will reveal his motives and vision for managing change for American and International surgeons, and he will discuss how private, not-for-profit organizations are important components for achieving change. Dr. Russell also will discuss how Young Surgeons can use their memberships in organizations to achieve change.

4:30-5:00 PM Achieving Change in the U.S. House of Representatives-How We Do It
U.S. Rep. Michael C. Burgess, MD (R-TX)
Dr. Burgess will reveal the circumstances that lead him to get involved in politics. Dr. Burgess will identify the personal characteristics that it takes to stay involved, and he will discuss the process and "politics of persuasion" that he uses to affect change in the U.S. House of Representatives. Finally, Dr, Burgess will share his advice about affecting change using the legislative process.
