LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Three concurrent sessions are offered; each session will be repeated following the break.

# 1
From Imus to Oprah to Katie

Patricia A. Clark, Communication Strategies, Ogden Dunes, IN

Today's medical leaders need to be expert communicators so that they can get their message across—to patients, to CME learners, or to legislators.  This session will offer practical tips of proven techniques to help surgical leaders develop and deliver expert communications.  You will learn how to develop your message and—more importantly—how to deliver that message successfully.

# 2
Implementing Change:  Leadership Skills to Overcome Obstacles (1825K PDF)

Stephen R.T. Evans, MD, FACS, Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, Georgetown University Hospital

What are the leadership skills necessary to affect change in a competitive marketplace? How can surgeons affect change in workplaces? Dr. Evans will review some of the constraints that make change difficult and provide his perspective on overcoming these obstacles. His comments and perspectives will be beneficial to community-based and academic surgeons who are trying to affect change in their institutions and practices.

# 3
Engaging Young Members of the Profession—Generational Concerns for Surgical Societies (235K PDF)

Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, MD, FACS, Reston, VA

John Armstrong, MD, FACS, Shands at the University of Florida, Gainesville

Keeping young members of the profession involved in volunteer and leadership activities is tricky.  These two surgeons have had major leadership roles in helping their surgical societies to address this challenging dilemma—one at the Metropolitan Washington (DC) Chapter (Dr. Maniscalso-Theberge), and the other at the American Medical Association (Dr. Armstrong).  This session will focus on how to assess your young members’ needs and how to plan and develop benefits and services that appeal to this special segment of the surgical profession.
