Getting Through: Assessing and Targeting Your Leadership Style for More Effective Communication, Buy-in, and Team Results
Moderator: Chad A. Rubin, MD, FACS, Chair, Committee on Young Surgeons; and President-Elect, South Carolina Chapter—ACS

In this session, you will have the opportunity to assess your personal leadership style, understand the dynamics of different approaches to leading, and practice techniques that can increase your effectiveness in "getting through" or influencing up, down, within your team, and across your organization. You'll learn to:

  • Recognize your own dominant leadership and communication styles
  • Perform a quick assessment of others' styles using important cues
  • Appreciate other people's styles and target ways to work more effectively with them
  • Expand and adjust your "natural" influencing style so that you will be most effective in any specific situation you are managing

This session will provide insights into the inner workings of Capitol Hill. Speakers (TBA) will share advice on how surgeons can be the best advocates for their patients and for their profession.

1:45–3:45 pm Accomplishing Your CME Mission
Moderator: Ajit Sachdeva, MD, FRCSC, FACS, Director, Division of Education

This Pre-Conference session will benefit all attendees who are responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating CME programs and events. A variety of topics will be covered by teachers who are recognized experts in the CME field, including (1) how CME affects physicians' practices, (2) how to design CME programs effectively—from needs assessment to curriculum design; and (3) how corporate sponsorship can be used to support the CME mission.

This session will feature congressional experts who will discuss the current environment on Capitol Hill and the implications for health care, both from the policymaking and the political perspectives.

10:15–11:00 am The Changing Face of the Health Care Policy Debate
A leading national health policy expert will discuss how the health care debate is changing for 2005 and for the next decade.
11:00 am–12:15 pm Pay-For-Performance
Congress and the Administration are planning to institute pay-for-performance systems under Medicare. Panel participants will discuss the various components of the new payment program and how it will affect surgery.

Chapter leaders will share their successful state advocacy experiences. Topics will include strategies they found useful, pitfalls to avoid, and practical tips for working with legislators, state specialty organizations, and other stakeholders.

New Procedures and Requirements for Chapters' CME Programs
Moderator: Rhonda Peebles, ACS Division of Member Services

In response to new disclosure requirements issued by the ACCME (Accreditation Council for CME), the College's Division of Education has modified the disclosure process for all CME activities. This session will describe the new CME procedures for Chapters' education programs to ensure compliance with the ACCME.

Chapter Performance Checklist
Responses to the Chapter Performance Checklist (CPC) will be reviewed and discussed. The CPC is an assessment tool developed by the Governors Committee on Chapter Activities.
